Media Web Tools: FTP Setup

Everyone:

  • Log in to your Dreamhost account
  • Click on “Users”
  • Click on “Manage Users”
  • Make sure “SFTP” is chosen
  • Enter a password and save
  • Also, IMPORTANT: Make note of the home directory (eg. /home/chrcar153). When setting up your FTP, your username will be the characters after home/ (eg. chrcar153).
  • After you do this, you may have to wait ~15 minutes to set up the FTP

Mac users:

Option 1: (Easier but more expensive. Great if you plan to continue coding in the future.)

  • Download Coda
  • Add a new site
  • On the site tab, Nickname is whatever you choose and Remote URL is http://www.yoursite.com. Don’t worry about the other fields.

Coda Example

  • On the server tab, choose SFTP as the protocol. The server is yoursite.com. The username is what was listed as your home directory (see above). Your password is whatever you set (see above).
  • You don’t need to worry about the other tabs.
  • Save the information, double-click on the site, and you should see your site’s folders in the “Files” tab.

Option 2:

  • Download Yummy FTP Lite
  • When you open it, you’ll be prompted to create a new connection
  • Protocol is SFTP. The server is yoursite.com. The username is what was listed as your home directory (see above). Your password is whatever you set (see above).

Yummy Example

  • Download Sublime Text as you will need it to edit your files

PC users:

  • Download Filezilla
  • Click File, then Site Manager
  • Click “New Site” and name it

Filezilla

  • In the “General” tab:
  • Host: yoursite.com
  • Port: 22
  • Protocol: SFTP
  • Logon type: Normal
  • The username is what was listed as your home directory (see above). Your password is whatever you set (see above).
  • Click “Connect,” and you should see files appear.
  • Download Sublime Text as you will need it to edit your files

Media Web Tools: FTP and other updates

If you can’t get connected via FTP in Filezilla, try using the information below (replacing my site with yours). That has worked for me, but let me know if you have any trouble. Remember to set your user type to SFTP in the DreamHost control panel.

Filezilla

I recommend downloading Sublime Text as your text editor.

Many of you have yet to sign up for Lynda.com. Even if you already know WordPress and HTML, please go ahead and sign up so that you can see what we’ll be going over. You’ll also be able to review any ideas that you haven’t practiced in a while. Finally, you will definitely need the videos when we get into the usability portion of the class, so you might as well sign up now.

Finally, the presentation from last class can be found below:

You’ll find 5 courses in your Lynda.com class, and we’ll be starting with WordPress Essentials. Be sure to watch the first two chapters this week. For those of you with experience, I went ahead and added a JavaScript course in case you want a challenge.

Let me know if you have any questions!
